The importance of PSHE
At Redmaids’ High School, we believe that a strong Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education is essential for empowering our
students to navigate the complexities of modern life with confidence, resilience, and purpose. In a rapidly changing world, PSHE provides a vital foundation
for personal development, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions,
build healthy relationships, and develop a positive sense of self.
Specialist delivery
In line with statutory requirements outlined by the UK Government, our PSHE curriculum incorporates all aspects of Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Health Education, and key topics such as digital literacy, financial capability, and mental wellbeing. These are delivered in a carefully structured, age-appropriate manner that adheres to the statutory guidance and reflects our commitment to holistic education.
At Redmaids’ High School, PSHE is taught through fortnightly lessons delivered by a dedicated PSHE specialist. This ensures that students benefit from expert instruction, enabling sensitive topics to be explored with depth and care. Our spiral curriculum revisits core themes at different stages of a student’s education, building upon prior knowledge and adapting to the developmental needs of each age group.

Integrated pastoral support
Our PSHE curriculum is seamlessly supported by a robust pastoral programme, ensuring that its principles are reinforced across the school environment. During tutor time and assemblies, students have the opportunity to engage with relevant themes through discussions, group activities, and interactive sessions. This integrated approach fosters a consistent and supportive atmosphere where students feel safe to explore challenging topics and seek guidance when needed.
Hands-on learning and external expertise
To enrich our PSHE provision, we invite a range of external speakers and organisations to share their expertise with our students. From workshops on pelvic floor health and mental wellbeing to city wide conferences on consent, these sessions bring real-world relevance to the classroom. Hands-on learning activities, such as first –aid workshops, self-defence classes and reflective exercises, further enhance engagement and understanding, making lessons memorable and impactful.
Why PSHE matters for girls?
As an all-girls school, we recognise the unique challenges and opportunities our students face. PSHE empowers them to navigate these with confidence, addressing issues such as self-esteem, body image, and equality in a safe and nurturing environment. Our curriculum encourages critical thinking, empathy, and resilience, laying the groundwork for them to become informed, compassionate, and capable leaders of the future.
Preparing for life beyond school
PSHE is about preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Through our tailored curriculum, students learn essential life skills that enable them to make positive choices, manage their wellbeing, and contribute meaningfully to society. By fostering an inclusive and supportive community, we ensure that every girl at Redmaids’ High is equipped to thrive in a diverse and dynamic world.
With its blend of specialist teaching, integrated pastoral care, and real-world connections, our PSHE programme reflects our unwavering commitment to nurturing the whole student. At Redmaids’ High, we believe that a strong PSHE curriculum is not just important — it is fundamental to the success and wellbeing of our students.
